Is colonialism a partner or collateral damage for technological advancements/products?

The colonial period itself spanned from the 16th centaury to the duration after world war 2, in which Hitler began stampeding to take over the world. It is often romanticized as this great period of adventure and exploration when travelling ships laden with otherworldly spoils of exotic lands returned to the European ports for “advancements”. So much so you can hear the Indiana Jones theme tune playing in the background. However, the harsh realism of colonialism was enslavement, exploitation, torment of the colonized and the industrialisation of global human trafficking.  The abuse and degradation that the masses suffered under colonialism and imperialism resulted in detrimental consequences that persist to the present day, around the globe and in our industries. Although, colonialism is now seen by many as a discredited form of rule, technology companies understand they wield a power of dominance in the global economy and therefore their behaviour becomes increasingly colon...

Story-telling

A gripping, heartfelt story-line can often be the distinction between an okay video game to a truly memorable experience. The fictional twists and plot thickening had us on our seats leaving us stunned to then continue to discuss in the years to come. Claiming we will never play or find another game like this, even if we end finding another game that we AGAIN fall in love with 2 months down the line, but nonetheless it’s this lasting effect that has turned game developers nowadays into one of the best story-telling magicians ever. Although, story-telling is ultimately a form of communication and through the years has developed itself into various platforms of media. The most common tool for narration is found within film and gaming for the plot to re-tell the story in a way that the reader could find it interesting, immersive and engaging. However, narration and story-telling in itself have many variations when it comes to defining the term but in terms of gaming there is the distinct...

Utopia and Dystopia

An ideal city is often inspired by the idea of "Utopia", a term used to describe a perfect place in terms of social, ethical and political values, but it does not exist in real space or time. Utopia is directly connected to the opposite meaning of Dystopia, which refers to a place where Dictatorship exists and characterized by degraded living conditions. The concept of Utopia was first used by Tomas Moore in 1516, who described in his book that Utopia is an ideal wealthy society based on social and economic equality. According to Boake (2006), the study of film material can help with future plans about utopian and new societies and additionally give ideas and influence the design of future cities. Many cinematic representations of the future world are influenced by utopian theories and visions of yet to come. The concept of "dystopia" though, shows the insecurity and lack of hope from people about the development of their future world and society (Prakash, 2010). Ty...

How well is a single narrative able to be understood across media at the end of the spectrum?

Innovative storytelling concepts have been the foreground of content management within marketing since the beginning of time, continuing to grow as our thirst for new technology and reliance on social media stems the narratives shared amongst the public. However, why is the story-telling such an important part of our growing industries? It is due to the psychological effects stories have on us. Narratives that are authentic, evoke emotion and are of general interest to the reader are the stories that will stay with us. Whilst the audience type will distinguish to what extent these narratives travel, this is known as transmedia storytelling. Transmedia-storytelling is a term formulated by Henry Jenkins that explains story-telling to be a ‘representative of a process in which integral elements of a fiction get dispersed systematically across multiple delivery channels for the purpose of creating a unified and coordinated entertainment experience. Ideally, each medium makes it own unique ...

HoverBoard

Image
All the 1900’s kids would have either watched or heard of ‘Back to the Future.’ A classical science fiction movie that follows a kid and a crazy scientist on epic adventures taking them to both the past and future. Yet for me, (and I’m sure most of you will agree) I was always fascinated by the hoverboard that ‘Marty’ used to elude his enemies and even save the day with. That flying contraption which was seen to be an advanced version of a skateboard was always one of the highlights in my opinion to represent the movie itself. The hoverboard is one of those objects that remind us of the past and future. Since this object is so generic it has been used in many classical movies but can also depict the future if we use the term ‘turning dreams into reality.’ Of course, the blockbusters such as Spiderman, where the Green Goblin was shown to be flying around on a ‘glider’ – similar to the hoverboard, Treasure Planet and even Static Shock. All these shows have all used some form of the ho...

GrandFather Clock

Image
Time is a concept that seemed a distant philosophy until the inventions of the earlier time contraptions such as the sundial and hourglass. Yet, these inventions were open to the public. So, time wasn’t hidden only for the rich, for once! However, the grandfather clock – a piece of fine machinery that acts as decoration for the rich that individuals were on a pursuit to attain in order to keep up appearances back in the middle ages, was in contrast a privilege for only those that could afford it. The grandfather clock was most unique in its design through the use of the pendulum swinging back and forth as its time keeping element, whilst being coated in the finest (at the time) wood. In fact, the design was specifically created as a large piece of furniture, with oak that could keep the entity of the house itself. Yet, the main attribute about the grandfather clock is the essence of family and the past it carries, automatically bestowing a sense of mystery confined within the oak pi...

Virtual Reality and dreams...

Image
Have you ever had one of those dreams where you feel so powerful, happy and hopeful, that when you wake up you either try and force yourself to go back to sleep so you can experience more of it or you get up feeling over the moon. Those dreams where you’re given powerful abilities (my favourite), where you are an important figure that everyone looks to, a celebrity or whatever you want! Honestly speaking, I tend to live in my imagination. A place I feel safe to explore, powerful enough to fight in and open to creating more. ‘My own world.’ An escape. A rope that allows me to climb out of reality, even if it is for a few seconds so I can experience happiness on my own terms. It’s hard enough to describe our dreams to people or even paint a picture of what we see when we enter the vast dimension of our imagination. The most expansive and technical source that science has come to know. Yet, now we have stepped further in to actually manipulating technology into creating our own virtual r...
